Adolescence and Technology

We discussed in class the importance of non-verbal cues and looked at the impact adolescence has on learning development (see below). We also talked about how technology can negatively impact social development because our focus is  removed from everything else.

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.

For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/

Do not copy my example.

  1. During Middle Adolescence, we have to start making our own choices and take school very seriously. We have to participate in our studies in order to pass the class. If students are using their phones in class, they will miss out on the lesson and could ultimately end up failing classes. This article I found shows that test scores went up by 6% after a cell phone ban was put into place, and students who were struggling academically had a 14% improvement after the ban. https://www.mnn.com/family/family-activities/blogs/students-get-better-grades-when-phones-are-banned.

    1. Great Allie. As you distance from your parents you will start having to make your own choices. Good sources to support your argument.

  2. During the Middle Adolescence, we don't have to use a phone in school because our parents send us to school to learn and pay attention to our teacher. We can use it out of school and not in school because we will be distracted by social media and posting the wrong things. If we use our phones in classes, at the end of the day we didn't learn nothing in school. The article I found shows that students will fail all their classes if they use their phones at school because they wouldn't concentrate on their studies. https://www.quora.com/Should-mobile-phones-be-banned-in-schools-colleges-and-offices.

  3. During Early Adolescence, children usually earn their privileges of getting a phone for safety purposes only. According to the chart above, many children in this age category struggle with trying to be normal, and especially now-a-days with social media, children's images of normal are what the media portrays it to be. With this constant reminder of what "normal" is, no child would be able to focus. According to this website, the media in a way directs children to their images of "normal", which in a way can be a distracting for both the student and their peers.

  4. During middle adolescence we have more responsibilities that we have to look after, especially in school. So having phones in class would cause a great distraction which would lead us down the wrong path farther away from success. According to the article I found it said that students who did not use their smartphones during a lecture/class wrote down 62% more notes. It also said that students without phones in class also got higher grades on their tests compared to other students that used their phones for unrelated purposes.

During middle adolescence teens are usually in a stage of experimenting with identity,

learning and friendships. Yet it can also be a place of both rapid and frequent change where

teens are feeling particularly high or low emotions. For example teens perform in more dangerous

behaviors, because an area in the human brain called the prefrontal cortex, responsible for

assessing risks and other dangers is still growing. Teens will more often than not start to drive,

drink and participate in sexual acts. This behavior is mostly about peer acceptance. A lot of the

time teens prioritize hanging out with their peers/ friends instead of parents and other guardian

figures because of the fear of social isolation which could lead to intense insecurity and self -

hate. Since teenagers’s brain grows during the period of adolescence it is essential for

teenagers to get sleep and pay attention and learn in school by a adult figure like a teacher. Kids

should not be on their phones or any electronics at school, social groups or when doing homework.

Since teenagers brains are in the middle of development, they have a increase in plasticity which

makes them able to remember and take in content faster, whereas adults are rooted to what they

know. Teenagers also make significant advance in communication and socialization which is why

teens should spend less of their time on electronics and more time socializing and paying

    attention and learning in school.

  6. During the Middle Adolescence, we need to start taking care of our own responsibilities and dealing with our own things. This is also a time when we really need to focus on school so I believe using our phones in class could be a distraction. Although, phones can be useful for studying and other purposes, it still does everything for us so we wouldn't have to do anything on our own. I also believe it would be a bad idea to use our phones during class because teenagers spend too much time on their phones and they need a break. The article I read provides a lot of cons to teens using their phones in school such as, harmful effects of digital devices, inappropriate materials, distraction from school work, child predators, and cyber bullying.

  7. During Middle Adolenscence, we start to become more independent, therefore we have more responsibilities especially with school work. Because of this, I believe that students should not be allowed to use their cell phones in school. Cell phones majorly affect how and when we complete tasks. Cell phones keep us from understanding and paying attention to the material being given to us. The article I read supports my claim by stating that “According to a 2010 study from Pew Research Center, 64% of students say they have texted in class and 25% have made or taken a call. And it's not just talking to others. That same study noted that 46% of students play games and 23% access social networks on their phone at any time.”

  8. While Middle Adolescence is occurring, your interest in moral thinking expands; you know what is right or wrong however you start to question if the right thing is worth doing. You should not hold your phone during school hours because of the influence to do the wrong thing and record it for the purpose to go viral. An example of this the infamous "Catch Me Outside" phenomenon Danielle Bregoli. Because of her constant disrespect and outrageous attitude, she became very popular, appeared on multiple red carpets and shows and even landed a successful rap career. This has and will probably continue to encourage other young children who are questioning what is right or wrong to partake in what is wrong. https://www.theodysseyonline.com/this-behavior-atrocious. As the writer of the article states, "I find it ABSOLUTELY ridiculous that people are fantasizing and actually enforcing her to act this way. There have been multiple accounts of her assaulting people". . "American culture seems to have a major obsession with watching people fail and be messy. For some reason, they feed off of bad behavior, disrespect, and overall poor character."

  9. During middle adolescence , children should not be able to use phones during school. During this day and age where many teens are already addicted to their phone, school should be a phone free place. It is a huge distraction to the lesson that teachers spend many hours planning. The article " 7 reasons why kids, cell phones and school don't mix" explain how a phone with access to friends and social media will win over the attention of a teen over a boring class. A student who is allowed to use their phone in class will use it. The article also explains that the ability to have your phone at all times including school teaches a lack of self control by allowing kids to use it whenever they want. This can also lead to poor social skills. Overall allowing kids to use their phone in school is not a good idea and can have effects that will last a lifetime.

    1. Well done Kaymora. Good advice and insight into child development from the author who happens to be an MD. My favorite: "While he’s (or she) in school, he tries to discipline his mind to focus on his studies and achieve something bigger for himself but since he lacks full mental maturity to do so, he gets very frustrated. Then, he feels like a failure because he can’t make his body and mind do what he really wants them to do. He relies on you, the adult, to help him do this. The best way for you to help is to do the adult thinking for him and make a path to success clear for him."

  11. Phones should not be used in school. As students, especially in high school, we are given a lot of work and responsibilities than we are used to. If we are allowed to use our phones, we will distract ourselves from being productive, which is the most important part of academics. Phones and social media can also cause an uncomfortable environment in school, if negative things are posted. One of the most important years of brain development are during adolescence. During puberty teens go through extreme highs and lows because of how body chemicals such as hormones, testosterone, and progesterone affect the emotions. This means that because of a teenager's emotions, they can act impulsively or have an extreme reaction to certain things which can worsen a situation. Overall, phones should be avoided during school hours to create a safe and productive environment for students as well as teachers.

  12. During adolescence, teenagers are very addicted to their phone and if you ask them, they can’t live without it. I think that it will be good to let them be able to use their phones in school because teenagers have a very small attention span. Maybe letting them use it during lunch wouldn’t be too bad. The article i chose highlights on this fact. This article states “teach students how to refocus, how to take care of something that is really nagging at them and then move on and put it away.”

  13. During middle adolescence we are changing mentally and our brains are constantly getting new information that is put in our head, which is good. In order to keep obtaining information we must take advantage of all our resources such as our phones. Phones can be a distraction but they also help us gather more information and learn more. It is all about the future they say. Phones are small electronic devices that allow us to search up billions of questions and theories without a haselle and it useful in many other ways as well. Although having a phone on our person during the school day gives us the ability to learn new things no matter where we are and that is important. Phones can be use for an educational purpose too not just for texting and social media.

  14. During middle adolescence, our bodies are changing and so are our brains. We are still developing and we are very impressionable. And while our phones are good for learning when used for it, we don't use it for that, we use to go on social media. If we were allowed to use your phones we would always be distracted and it can also be very unsafe too. People can not be who they say they are or you can be cyber-bullied which lowers your self-esteem. The Huffington Post supports my argument by saying that we are still developing and having a lowered self-esteem while growing is bad and that teachers in school that allow phones have a hard time keeping their students to pay attention.

  15. Throughout Middle Adolescence, a transitioning child may find classes to get harder and harder, resulting in zoning out and going to the more preferable activity for most teens, being on the phone. Though this relieves the stress of the student by allowing them to not focus in class, student tend to get distracted by this device, therefore leaving them unable to comprehend what they should be learning in class. In support to this claim “Smartphones aren’t a Smart Choice in Middle School” states “Students who interact with their cell phones in class perform worse on tests -- often a full letter grade or more. In fact, just having phones within reach, can cause academic performance to decline, whether they're used or not.” This proves my theory of youth in mid adolescence, struggling in school because of their phones by providing factual evidence.

  16. During Middle or Early Adolescence, a young teen transitioning from elementary to middle or from middle to high school may experience additional stress and find everything so much harder. This can result in them being unable to focus or pay attention very long, being bored, which can tend to lead them right into using their phones. Though can be a relief of stress by giving them something they enjoy and vaguely understand to focus on, they can stop retaining information from their lessons if they use phones in class. In support of this claim, "Cellphones in classrooms contribute to failing grades: Study" says that "smart phones can reduce the ability to think to a person’s full potential, and additional research from Stanford University reveals that intense multitasking decreases the efficiency of completing a given task." This proves my point that the use of smartphones in class can cause kids in middle and early adolescence can distract them, thus effecting their ability to retain information and actually learn in class.

  17. During early adolescence children shouldn’t be able to use their phones in school because they are at an age where they don’t know how to use them appropriately in school. Kids in that age group already use their phones enough outside of school now they are going to be completely attached it to it if they also used it during school hours. Every generation get more and more attached to electronics our 8 hour school day is the only time they don’t text or call or play games instead they learn which will help them in the real world unlike candy crush a popular mobile game children and adults play.

  18. In the first video: It states that in a few years computers would not only be able to look at pictures but understand them. I feel as of though it means that our current understanding of technology will change a develop massively. Technology could help us positively in the future because it could further development/research production massively. It could soon be able to help diagnose skin diseases from just a scanning. Such as skin cancer, which would help greatly considering if the computer catches the skin cancer at an early age, there is a possibility that doctors could find a way to stop it from progressing any further. I think this would be a great advantage in society and could help save many lives.
In the second video: Facebook’s Executive is describing how much social media is destroying our world. He had given an example of a kidnapping in India and how there had been false accusations of who took part in the kidnapping. In this miscommunication, people were murdered from the false accusations/manipulations which had been brought out by social media. He had listed other examples of how technology and social media have affected us greatly in a negative way. His description had changed my view on the way I now see social media and technology’s development. I believe technology will affect us both positively and negatively, yet there have to be some limitations as to how seriously we will take all the information given to us from the internet.

  19. Late adolescence should be able to bring their cellular devices with them to school or to work because they are adults and they know how to behave in that setting and they know what not to use their phones for. They are grown adults who know how to be professional. According to https://www.thebalancecareers.com/rules-for-using-cell-phones-at-work-526258 it tells you the rules that adults should follow while at work to make sure they don’t usre their cellular device at work.
