How to give a killer presentation

Giving presentations is hard. Many of us are extremely uncomfortable speaking in front of an audience. It takes practice and skill. Here are some helpful tips. Excerpts from: https://hbr.org/2013/06/how-to-give-a-killer-presentation

Frame your story
We all know that humans are wired to listen to stories, and metaphors abound for the narrative structures that work best to engage people. When I think about compelling presentations, I think about taking an audience on a journey. A successful talk is a little miracle—people see the world differently afterward.

Plan Your Delivery
There are three main ways to deliver a talk. You can read it directly off a script or a teleprompter. You can develop a set of bullet points that map out what you’re going to say in each section rather than scripting the whole thing word for word. Or you can memorize your talk, which entails rehearsing it to the point where you internalize every word—verbatim.

Develop Stage Presence
The biggest mistake we see in early rehearsals is that people move their bodies too much. They sway from side to side, or shift their weight from one leg to the other. People do this naturally when they’re nervous, but it’s distracting and makes the speaker seem weak. Simply getting a person to keep his or her lower body motionless can dramatically improve stage presence.

Plan the Multimedia
Keep it simple; don’t use a slide deck as a substitute for notes (by, say, listing the bullet points you’ll discuss—those are best put on note cards); and don’t repeat out loud words that are on the slide. Not only is reciting slides a variation of the teleprompter problem—“Oh, no, she’s reading to us, too!”—but information is interesting only once, and hearing and seeing the same words feels repetitive.

From the video we watched in class write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) critique about Greta's presentation. How did he follow the strategies identified above?

  1. I think that Greta's presentation was great. To me she almost followed all of the strategies used above. She framed her story by making it more personal which help draw in the audience and does bring us on a little"adventure". For her delivery of the presentation, she memorized what she wanted to say or just said it of the top of her head which is even better. For planning the multimedia she did well also since she didn't use bullet points or read of a screen she passed this area of the presentation. The only part of her presentation that I think that she could have done better was her stage presence. She seemed to be very serious ,but slightly nervous. That was my only problem that I had with her presentation besides that I think that she covered every aspect of a "killer" presentation very well. I also think she left a strong mark on her audience due to her skills in giving such professional presentation.

  2. Greta's presentation was intriguing. Beginning her story with a personal aspect about her life grasped the audience. The audience hung on to every word she said and her deliverance was chilling. When she put into perspective her, her grandchildren and her children's future, it made the audience as well as watchers think. Overall, her presentation was great and worth-watching.

  3. Greta delivered her speech very clearly. She had her whole speech memorized and made eye contact with the audience. Also, she made the audience laugh to keep her audience focused and relaxed. Greta gave proper examples to prove her point. She didn't move around much and was very calm and steady. Also, she used her story in her speech and was very convincing. She didn't repeat anything she said and was very entertaining. Her point was made very clearly and convinced me to support her argument.

  4. Greta's speech was a wonderful speech and it followed quite a few of the strategies above. She told a compelling story in her words and she seemed to know what she was saying so I'll say she memorized what she was saying. However, I did notice she shifted quite a bit during her talk, showing that she was quite nervous, meaning she didn't really develop a stage presence and there were no slides or bullet points so there wasn't really any Multimedia involved.

The thing that affected me the most was her story, including the story about when she was younger and the words she said about the future-her future- made me feel emotional because those are all things I've thought too.

  5. In my opinion, she followed each step of the strategies identified above extremely well. She framed her story-aka the threat of climate change- by explaining to us the dangers of climate change and how she wants action to finally be taken against it. She gave many facts and examples along with her framing to support her statement. With the next step, it didn't sound like she was following one of the traditional ways to deliver a speech. She did what few humans can-she delivered the speech from her heart-and truly meant what she said. With the step of developing her presence of the stage-I think she did well. Yes, she moved a lot, but in her situation it's understandable. She was speaking to a few thousand people, so in that situation it would be important to face everyone. For the last step-planning the multimedia- I think she did well. She was repeating herself a lot, but it was because she wanted to get it in people's heads that we need to do something about climate change. When you get something into someone's head-they will do something about it. She did an amazing job with these presentation and I look forward to seeing more.

  6. Greta's whole presentation was overall fascinating and really compelling, since she stated her claim and gave evidence to prove it and she also talked about her personal experiences as well. Throughout the presentation she always kept eye contact with the audience and talked clearly with a clear voice, however she moved side to side some and did not keep her arms at her side which could show she was nervous. She also showed that she knew what she was presenting and she was passionate about it which helps when trying to reach out to your audience to get a point across.

  7. Greta had a strong argument and had compelling points. But she did seem quite nervous. She framed her story correctly by giving a story to intrigue the audience. Her delivery was good because she used facts. Her stage presence wasn't that great since she didn't move around a lot and did not use body language. And she was also interesting

  8. Greta’s presentation was amazing and very clear. In my opinion, she followed all the strategies listed above but the one that stood out to the most was her stage presence. At such a young age, Greta did not show any signs that she was nervous or not confident about her speech. Usually, people move consistently during their presentations but Greta stood perfectly still with confidence, which caught her audience's attention.

  9. Greta's presentation regarding climate change struck me through how she framed her story. She kept her audience engaged by including a more personal aspect that we can relate to. She mentioned her future grandchildren and how her life would progress which intrigued me as well as my other classmates. People's own stories and experiences naturally excite us more which kept everyone paying attention to her words thoroughly. She has her presentation memorized, but also made it feel like a conversation rather than verbatim. She made eye contact with the audience and didn't show any signs of nervousness. She did move around much and stayed roughlt in one place. Overall it was a great presentation and evoked many of the strategies listed above.

  10. Greta presented her speech nicely by controlling her body movements, and having her speech well memorized. Her choice of words made it easy to grab the audience's attention and she maintained eye contact with the crowd throughout her presentation. Her points were backed with factual evidence and she took a different approach then other presenters making it more interesting to watch.

  11. In my opinion, Greta’s presentation was amazing and very gripping. I believe that Greta followed the steps exactly and made a wonderful presentation. She made her presentation and her delivery clear and to the point. She used her own personal experience to help carry her point across and she also didn't move around or sway too much which is good. She did all steps correctly and gave a great presentation, which I believe left a strong impression on the audience.

  13. Greta's presentation was phenomenal. She made we want to change my ways about how I helped my world with the global warming epidemic. Her statements were very powerful and she barley moved unless it was an important part of the speech and she needed to get the listener's attention. She followed all the steps needed to make a perfect presentation.

  14. Greta's presentation came off as strong and convincing because of the way she carried herself, and also by the way she was able to project her tone in a confident matter and maintain eye contact with the audience at all times. Most times we are able to see when someone who is giving a presentation is nervous by the way the constantly shift their body or stumble over their words.Since Greta did not do any of this you could tell she felt strongly about this situation and wanted to state her point clearly. Greta was able to grab the audience's attention and not let it go throughout her whole presentation. In conclusion, her statements about and against global warming had made listening to her speech even more effective considering she was able to memorize such amazing facts on this topic.
